East Pakistan and India were pitted against West Pakistan in battles that lasted for nine months and resulted in the secession of East Pakistan and the creation of an independent Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Liberation War, which took place in 1971, was fought by Bangladesh against Pakistan in order for Bangladesh to become an independent country. The Bengali name for Victory Day is বিজয় দিবস ( Bijôy Dibôs). In the Bengali Calendar Victory Day takes place on 1 Poush (Poush is the ninth month of the Bengali calendar and is also the first month of Winter). In 1996, the national Bangladesh Bank created and issued a 10 Taka note that commemorates the 25th anniversary of Victory Day. The day is also celebrated by Bangladeshis and Bangladesh communities around the world. The day is also commemorated across India as well in honour of the Bangladeshi and Indian soldiers who fought and laid down their lives.
