Having made that assessment, I determined to always play on Campaign Difficulty = Very Hard and to adjust the Battle Difficulty to my comfort level. I didn't experiment with hard to see where it fir between the two. That was a very clear and distinctive difference between Very hard vs Normal. This made the battles much more interesting and challenging. I noticed that on Difficulty < Very hard, the AI would advance with fractional stacks, often of just 8 or 10 units but on Very Hard it would generally wait until it had a full (or nearly so) stack before advancing on the Player. When learning I played the Italian Campaign on Normal a few times before switching to Very Hard Campaign Difficulty.
